IOM presented the project Joint Complementary Mechanism for Sustainable Reintegration in Brazil (SURE) on 25 March 2019, in Lisbon.

The project will strengthen and complement the support given by Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration programs already implemented by IOM in Portugal, Ireland and Belgium. The project focuses on the three main Brazilian states to which migrants have returned to in the past years: Goiás (32,8%), Minas Gerais (16,3%) and São Paulo (15,2%).

Among its objectives, the project will strengthen the connection between pre-departure and post-arrival counselling and create of a referral and coordination mechanism to promote a safe and dignified return and a more sustainable reintegration in Brazil.

The meeting took place at Hotel Olissipo, with the participation of 17 officials from IOM Portugal, IOM Brazil, IOM Belgium, IOM Ireland, Portugal’s Immigration and Borders Service (SEF), Ireland’s Department of Justice and Equality, Project Resgate (Goiás), São Paulo City Hall and Minas Gerais City Hall.
